County of San Diego officials are examining a proposal to construct a two-mile bike and pedestrian pathway that will be suspended in an enclosed tube nearly 200 feet above the water underneath the Coronado Bay Bridge.  The study will examine whether the nearly half century old bridge has sufficient structural and seismic integrity to support an attached pathway.

In addition to construction feasibility, officials are examining the project’s impacts on public safety, emergency response times and concerns from the Navy, which needs about 200 feet clearance for ship antennas to pass beneath the bridge.

The cost for construction are estimated at $50 million to connect the tube pathway to the County’s 24-mile Bayshore Bikeway.
