Engineers in the Netherlands have come up with an innovative design to save money and enegry on roadway lighting: glow-in-the-dark paint.  Hailed as the Smart Street Project, engineers applied glow-in-the-dark paint to existing roadway striping  on a stretch of Highway N329 in the town of Oss.

The paint contains a “photo-luminising” powder that charges up in the daytime and slowly releases a green glow at night, theoretically doing away with the need for streetlights.

The project has garnered international recognition and many agencies around the world are watching closely as Netherlands continues to test its performance and durability.
